One of one. Two rimless ovals hung from a thread of gold wire, so fine the lenses seem to float in front of the face. Brown lenses shade from cocoa at the top to a pale tea tint at the bottom, warm rather than dark. In place of temples, a gold chain runs from the outer edge of each lens to a pair of raw blue quartz stones, each hand-set in a gold-dipped cap.

The Frame

Gold-tone metal wire tracing the upper edge of each rimless oval lens, joined by a slim bridge. Temple-less: the chain is the temple.

The Lens

Brown gradient polycarbonate lenses: lightweight, shatterproof, UV400. Soft enough to flatter the eye, tinted enough to take the glare off a long afternoon.

The Chain

18K gold-plated box chain, with enough weight to hang straight and enough polish to catch a glance from across the table.

The Stone

Two natural blue quartz stones, left raw and hand-set in 18K gold-plated caps. Pale as sea glass, with a frosted surface and edges that were never cut to match. This is the only Rapallo.

Designed in Egypt.

A pair held by a chain.

Most glasses are held by two arms. These are held by a chain — and every other decision followed from that one.

THE FRAME

There are no arms.

The chain clips into a small gold loop at each corner, passes the ear, and falls. Behind that loop there is nothing at all.

Polycarbonate. It absorbs impact instead of breaking, and the UV400 filter is part of the material itself — no coating on top to scratch away or fade.

Square links keep their line instead of twisting into a rope, so the chain lies flat and stays put. The 18K plating covers every link, not just the faces you see.

THE BALANCE

So what actually keeps it on?

Weight, settled before assembly. The chain is weighed against the frame and against the stone, so the piece balances itself and sits where you set it.
