One of one. A rimless oval with nothing to hold it but a slim gold bridge and two small gold end-pieces at the corners, so the lenses seem to float in front of the eyes. Blue-grey lenses fade from smoke at the top to a warm rose haze at the bottom. In place of temples, a gold chain drapes to two raw pale blue quartz stones, each hand-set in a gold-dipped cap.

The Frame

Gold-tone metal bridge and end-pieces, and nothing else. Rimless: the edge of the lens is the line of the frame. Temple-less: the chain is the temple.

The Lens

Blue-grey gradient polycarbonate lenses: lightweight, shatterproof, UV400. Cool at the brow, warm at the cheek, the kind of tint that softens a face rather than hiding it.

The Chain

18K gold-plated box chain, square-linked and substantial, so it lies quietly on the collarbone and drops in a clean line when the glasses come off.

The Stone

Two natural pale blue quartz stones, left raw and hand-set in 18K gold-plated caps. Each has its own icy flecks and its own shade of blue; no other pair carries these two. This is the only Stresa.

Designed in Egypt.

Most glasses are held by two arms. These are held by a chain — and every other decision followed from that one.

THE FRAME

There are no arms.

The chain clips into a small gold loop at each corner, passes the ear, and falls. Behind that loop there is nothing at all.

Polycarbonate. It absorbs impact instead of breaking, and the UV400 filter is part of the material itself — no coating on top to scratch away or fade.

THE BALANCE

So what actually keeps it on?

Weight, settled before assembly. The chain is weighed against the frame and against the stone, so the piece balances itself and sits where you set it.
