One of one. A rimless oval with no frame to speak of, only two amber-brown lenses held by a slim gold bridge and a pair of gold end pieces. The tint is warm and even, the colour of strong tea held up to a window. In place of temples, a gold chain runs down to two raw purple quartz stones, one pale lilac and one deep violet, each hand-set in a gold-dipped cap.

The Frame

Gold-tone metal rimless oval: a fine bridge, clear nose pads and two small gold end pieces, nothing else. Temple-less: the chain is the temple.

The Lens

Solid amber-brown polycarbonate lenses: lightweight, shatterproof, UV400. They warm everything they look at and soften the glare of an afternoon.

The Chain

18K gold-plated box chain, fine enough to disappear against the skin and heavy enough to hang straight when the glasses rest on the chest.

The Stone

Two natural purple quartz stones, left raw and hand-set in 18K gold-plated caps. They were never cut to match, so one runs pale and one runs deep. This is the only Ischia.

Designed in Egypt.

Most glasses are held by two arms. These are held by a chain — and every other decision followed from that one.

THE FRAME

There are no arms.

The chain clips into a small gold loop at each corner, passes the ear, and falls. Behind that loop there is nothing at all.

Polycarbonate. It absorbs impact instead of breaking, and the UV400 filter is part of the material itself — no coating on top to scratch away or fade.

Weight, settled before assembly. The chain is weighed against the frame and against the stone, so the piece balances itself and sits where you set it.
